Shingles vs. metal roofing for Central PA snow
Compare lifespan, snow performance, cost and fit before choosing a material.
By Esteam Roofer | Updated October 17, 2026
Central Pennsylvania roofs have to handle snow load, freeze-thaw cycles, wind and summer heat. Both architectural shingles and standing seam metal can perform well when properly installed. The right choice depends on your home, budget and plans.
| Factor | Architectural shingles | Standing seam metal |
|---|---|---|
| Typical service life | Often 20 to 30 years | Commonly 40 years or longer |
| Upfront cost | Lower | Higher |
| Snow behavior | Holds snow; may be prone to ice dams without ventilation | Sheds snow quickly; snow guards recommended over entries |
| Wind | Good with proper nailing and sealing | Strong with concealed fasteners and proper installation |
| Maintenance | Periodic inspection and repairs | Low |
| Best fit | Most homes and budgets | Farmhouses, long-term homes and snow-heavy sites |
Ice dams and metal
Metal does not remove the need for proper insulation, air sealing and ventilation. Heat loss from the house can still melt snow and form ice at the eaves.
Snow guards
Snow can slide off metal roofs suddenly. Snow guards over doors, walkways, driveways and lower roofs keep snow from falling onto people and property.
Our recommendation
Choose shingles when budget and neighborhood style are the priority and metal when you plan to stay long term and want low maintenance. Our proposals show options side by side.
